Victoria Falls is known worldwide: Komichi

MDC-T chairman Senator Morgen Komichi has endorsed moves to make Victoria Falls a city, adding that it deserves the status due to its worldwide popularity.

Victoria Falls is arguably the major highlight of tourism in Zimbabwe and draws many international tourists.

At one point, ailing Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) chief executive Dr Kaseke described it as a self-selling destination in Zimbabwe.

This has seen the government moving on to declare it a Special Economic Zone in a bid to attract more investment to the town.

Speaking in the Senate, Komichi said upgrading Victoria Falls into a city is a noble move.

“Victoria Falls is known worldwide, if we were to do a survey, we would still come to the point that Victoria Falls is known worldwide.

“It is one of the Seven Wonders of the world and it was not proper to have it in a place where there is no city status. This move was actually too late and we would like to express our joy on the attainment of city status for Victoria Falls,” he said.

According to the Senator, the fact that the town has the best airport and the hotels makes it suitable.

“One of the best airports in Africa is found in Victoria Falls and one of the best hotels is found in Victoria Falls. In Southern Africa, Victoria Falls is one of the best places which hosts very big meetings in the region.

“We are happy that towns have increased because there was only Hwange and Lupane in that region, but these are very small places. Now that Matabeleland North is going to get a city, this is going to bring joy to the people who dwell in that particular region.

“This will also bring unity to the people that the government does not favour one region over the other. I strongly support this motion,” he said
